MediaInfo

by: CNET staff on August 29, 2011

Media files come in numerous different formats these days, and it's not always easy to get a quick look at their characteristics. MediaInfo is a simple utility that can provide users with metadata about their audio and video files, including codecs, and frames per second.

The program's interface is plain and easy to navigate, with menus across the top and buttons down the left side. You can select either an individual file or a whole folder of files to view. There are eight different views to choose from--Basic, Sheet, Tree, Text, HTML, XML, MPEG-7, and PBCore 1.2--each of which provides a variety of different information, such as file size, duration, bit rate, compression mode, and color space. You can export metadata information in a CSV, sheet, text, or HTML file. MediaInfo doesn't have much in the way of documentation aside from an FAQ on the publisher's Web site, but the program is really pretty self-explanatory, at least for users who already know what all of this metadata means. MediaInfo is definitely a program that's meant for people who already have substantial experience working with audio and video files, not because it's hard to use, but because what it does will be of little use to amateurs. But if you need a simple tool that can quickly give you the lowdown on your media files, MediaInfo is definitely worth checking out.

window.addEvent('domready', function() { $$('div[id^="universalVideo"]').set('styles', { clear: 'none', overflow: 'hidden' }); });

MediaInfo supplies technical and tag information about a video or audio files. Example of information are codec, bit rate, frames per second, width, height, count of channels, duration, title, author, language of subtitles, and name of chapters.

Multiple means to view information (text, sheet, tree, and HTML) and you can customize these views. Exporting possibilities for text, CSV, HTM, Graphical Interface, or Command Line are available. Supported formats include MKV, OGM, AVI, MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, DVD, OGG, MP3, WAV, RA, AC3, DTS, AAC, M4A, AU, and AIFF.

"Does what I exepect.`"

January 29, 2011  |   By snottgaard

Version: MediaInfo 0.7.41

Pros

Good at identifying duplicate or close-duplicate files.

Cons

Displays many potential duplicates which are not in any way related to one another.

Summary

Works well - just be vigilant on what you actually delete. Perhaps the paid version is better at just showing closely related duplicate ms3's.
