Dictionary .NET

Dictionary .NET is a small program that uses Google's dictionary and translation services. It's not very intuitive, but once you get it figured out, it's a handy tool to have around.

The program's interface is mysterious, with an empty space where you're supposed to enter your search term, and a larger empty box where we figured the search results would appear. We tried searching for some words in English, and English definitions came back. That was all well and good, but we thought that the point of the program was to translate between languages, not just give us English definitions. We clicked around a bit, starting with the question mark on the interface, which we assumed would lead us to the Help file. But there was no Help file. The Options menu did contain a long list of languages with check boxes next to them, but we weren't sure what that meant in the context of the program. Finally, quite by accident, we stumbled upon the answer; a well-disguised button on the interface that opens a list of languages between which users can translate. We tried several languages and were able to easily translate back and forth. Users should note that the program really is a dictionary and not a translator; you won't be able to translate blocks of texts with it. But as a dictionary it works fine, once you figure it out.

Dictionary .NET is free. It comes as a ZIP file and doesn't require installation. We recommend this program to all users.

Dictionary .NET is a multilingual dictionary translating from or to 65 languages using Google's services. Afrikaans, Albanian, Arabic, Belarusian, Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese-simp, Chinese-trad, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Filipino, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Gujarati, Greek, Haitian Creole, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Icelandic, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malay, Malayalam, Maltese, Marathi, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Welsh, Yiddish, Armenian, Azerbaijani, Basque, Georgian, and Urdu. "This is a big help for language solutions"

September 18, 2011  |   By mlotok

Version: Dictionary .NET 4.1.4276

Pros

This program's use is very intuitive and is an easy way to figure out how to say what you want to say, in another language. It even has an icon to press that gives an audio pronunciation of your words

Cons

This program sometimes translates a little too literally, thereby giving sentences that may not be conversationally accurate.

Summary

I'll keep this, and any updates, on my computer for easy solutions for linguistic expression issues. Highly recommended

Version: Dictionary .NET 2.9.3920

Pros

Double click on a word to highlight it, then press a hotkey (assignable from the "options" if you press the "?" in the R corner of software window) and the word pops into the box and is translated.

Cons

Have to be online for this to work, but will work in any application when you are on line.

Summary

For free, it works well, you can configure it so the background is blank or transparent.

"Excellent dictionary which is easy to use."

October 29, 2009  |   By figments4me

Version: Dictionary .NET 1.9.3562

Pros

This dictionary is very user friendly and finds most words that you might throw at it. I like the fact that you can also access a thesaurus easily enough when using this tool.

Cons

I found no real down side to this program except that the Tray Dictionary I downloaded is easier to access and is also an excellent dictionary.

Summary

All in all, I like dictionary.com. It is very user friendly, is an excellent reference source, and also allows access to a thesaurus. I use it quite a bit, but I do find that my Tray Dictionary is easier to access and just as good of a reference library. I haven't found the Tray Dictionary as versatile in that it does not provide access to a thesaurus but, as a dictionary I use my Tray dictionary more often.
