Duplicate Annihilator

by: CNET staff on February 17, 2013

Image files use up a lot of hard-drive space, and searching for multiple copies of photos can be time consuming. Duplicate Annihilator for Mac helps identify extra copies of the same photo in iPhoto and allows the user to tag the duplicates.

Duplicate Annihilator for Mac searches for duplicate photos in iPhoto. The program is able to remove or tag photo duplicates. When copies of the same photo are found, the program tags one as the original and the rest of the copies as duplicates. This program includes many modifiable elements for searching and tagging of duplicates. This free version allows you to compare up to 20 selected photos at a time or 500 random photos. The limitations on this version prevent you from seeing how long a scan of more than 500 photos would take. This program is definitely made to help organize huge photo backlogs, but unfortunately the free version is restrictive. The full version costs $7.95.

Duplicate Annihilator for Mac seems to be a useful program, but the free trial restricts an accurate assessment. This version would be suitable for personal use as long as you have a limited number of photos in iPhoto. Without the trial restrictions, the full version may be suitable for regular use by amateur photographers.

Editors' note: This is a review of the trial version of Duplicate Annihilator for Mac 4.4.1.

Yes nowdays iPhoto protects you from importing duplicates but if you are like me you have managed to do so anyway. Duplicate Annihilator takes on the time consuming task comparing the images in your iPhoto library using effective algorithms to make sure that no duplicates escapes. When found the duplicate will either be marked with a description of your choice to make it searchable or simply moved to iPhotos trashcan.

"Complete June"

Version: Duplicate Annihilator 4.1.0

Pros

None, Nada, zero, zilch

Cons

This program will randomly mark single photos as duplicates. It does the opposite of what it's supposed to do.

Summary

I've tried every setting and both magic mode and classic mode. Tried MD5 mode, file name, etc.. It just randomly marks single photos as duplicates. Glad I checked it before deleting photos. It the program can't even see duplicate file names then it need a complete rewrite. Don't waste your money on this junk program.

Updated on Aug 7, 2012

I ended up deleting over 10k duplicates Aperture decided to give me, one by one.

"Jury is still out"

January 30, 2012  |   By dbennettrn

Version: Duplicate Annihilator 3.6.0

Pros

None Yet as nothing is working

Cons

Tried the free version - it only sorts through 500 photos, and I could not find where the 'duplicates' were. Instructions say search for 'duplicates' but nothing would display. Tried again with it set to delete duplicates and that seemed to work, but with 9000+ photos, many being duplicates thanks to IPhoto I went ahead and paid for the full version. As soon as I put in the serial #, it could not register & the website would not load anymore.
The server - could not be found! I may just go ahead and buy another program instead of dining around with this one.

Summary

Hopefully the website's server will come back up and the registration will work - but the old saying 'you get what you pay for' is absolutely true in this case!

Version: Duplicate Annihilator 3.4.1

Pros

It's effective and straightforward, doesn't mess with your library but just tags originals/duplicates leaving you the power to compare photos and make your final decisions right into iPhoto

Cons

Because it works through iPhoto it can be really really really slow on giant libraries

Summary

Works as advertised, it will save your day for a few bucks

"Sorry, I could not make this work for me."

February 13, 2011  |   By evorsatz

Version: Duplicate Annihilator 3.1.2

Pros

It appears to be loading all the duplicates & probably is, but I am not sure how to delete them & be sure it is only the duplicates. I have moved some of the photos into folders on purpose.....

Cons

Should be better explained. Granted I am computer challenged, but this was a waste of money for me.

"Download version doesn't match CNET list"

January 30, 2011  |   By ricklib

Version: Duplicate Annihilator 3.1.9

Pros

Great way to slim iPhoto

Cons

A bit hard to understand

Summary

CNET Download says it should be v.3.1.9. What downloads is 3.1. Hence, Tech Tracker says I need to update, but the correct version is not available.

"gets rid of memory-hogging duplicates"

January 19, 2011  |   By lizawolf_dotmac

Version: Duplicate Annihilator 3.0.2

Pros

In Photoshop, where the files may be huge, you can't afford to have space-wasting duplicates around.

Cons

I can't think of anything.

Summary

It's great, I just love it. Now I don't have to worry about having all of those duplicates around hogging space.

"It is easy to use and is a great help."

January 19, 2011  |   By PH1sailor43

Version: Duplicate Annihilator 3.0.2

Pros

It's much easier to let the program do the work.

Cons

It doesn't anillatealle all of he duplicates. I says it marks the duplicates but so far I haven't seen any markinks.. It feels like the program is missing something.

Summary

It works OK, but after you run it you still have to go in and eliminate the unwanted images manually. It does more sorting than deleting.
