Clean and lean: all cocoa
strong, customisable search facilities
blazingly fast,
supports Unicode,
many shortcuts
a 4-pane correspondence view

Summary

MailMate has become my reliable workhorse. It is fast, does not hang or choke like Mail is wont to do, is strong in the way you can search and filter information, very customisable, and has this great 4-pane view (3-pane + correspondence) which I did not know I missed until I had it.
The developer is responsive and takes pains to add support for additional features. I am using a beta which offers support for IMAP-servers that do not implement the UIDPLUS extension. Very very pleased-and I have been looking for years!
