"Does it capture video 'screen shots' ?"

January 16, 2011  |   By mymagichands

Version: ScreenSteps 2.8.9

Pros

I chose this software thinking it would allow me to capture video 'screen shots' while the video is in 'pause'.

Cons

I don't see anything in the instructions that will do that ???
The description and tutorial is vague.

Summary

Can anyone explain what this software is actually designed to do before I commit to buy it.

"Simple, straightforward, gets the job done"

December 7, 2010  |   By KStrand11

Version: ScreenSteps 2.8.7b65

Pros

I was able to figure out how to use it and post lessons complete with screeshots and text annotations within a half hour!

Cons

MIght need to spend another hour or so to figure out what I don't like.

Summary

I needed a specific little app to get a specific kind of job done in a hurry. I plan to use this often in the web courses I teach when a quick step by step is needed to promptly answer a student's question.

This is a pretty useful tool. But it does drive me a bit nuts at times that for some reason none of my usual text editing navigation shortcuts work, e.g. option+left arrow, option+right arrow, cmd+shift+right arrow, etc. What's the deal?

"EXCELLENT SUPPORT"

I downloaded this software to try it before buying. I created a small test file (which was very easy as the software does exactly what the online tutorial says it will do). I was very pleased with the results.

When I came to export the lesson file, it would export as HTML put not as PDF. I sent an email to the support centre and received a reply within 10 minutes. Over the next hour we exchanged several emails and the developer had identified the problem and promised to put out a maintenance update to solve the problem. Meanwhile he gave me sufficient information to allow me to avoid the problem (and save PDFs) in other lessons that I develop.

I am very pleased with the results I am achieving with the product and it is quick and easy to use. I had previously been producing "lessons" about Photoshop and building them in to Powerpoint presentations. ScreenSteps produces better results in a fraction of the time.

"Wonderful tool for making tutorials / lessons!!"

I work in the technical support field, for a mac-based company (yay!)... I used to use Word to make tutorials, but only did so when truly necessary because of how long it took. Using the auto-snap feature and ctrl-cmd-shft-4 key-combo for taking screenshots direct to clipboard, which throws it directly into your next step, the process is now so fast & streamlined (not to mention beautifully formatted) that I am putting out tutorials about 4x as often, and each takes at most half the time it used to take me in Word. The only thing I hope for in the future is a slightly more capable image editor... like having the ability to add numbers or text boxes over the pictures, and perhaps some arrows instead of just boxes & circles. Keep up the great work!!

"Simple...VERY Helpful, great App"

I do an awful lot of remote troubleshooting for clients on both Macs and PCs. I downloaded and have been trying this app for sending instructions to them on how to do various things, that they always seem to forget.

This app has worked great! Prior to this I was screen capturing using the Mac built in feature, going into Preview to crop, taking them into something else to add circles, pointers, etc. and finally either sending them a PDF or building it into an email. What a pain and time consuming.

I used this app all day today and it worked great. I was pounding out instructions left and right in a fraction of the time.

My only real suggestion would be to add some other options for highlighting items, like a filled highlight box (like a yellow highlighter) and arrows, but being able to edit highlights after I have drawn them would be great too!

Since you can export to PDF and HTML, another thought would be the ability to also do short screen capture movies. That would really be cool! Be able to add both pictures and movies. Just a thought as you develop this.

Anyway, keep up with this app, I really like it!
