FileLocator Pro

by: CNET staff on May 05, 2010

Despite our best intentions, most of us don't do a great job of keeping the contents of our computers well-organized. And usually this isn't a problem, until we're trying to find something. That one file....And we're pretty sure it had that one word in it....And we could have sworn it was in My Documents....But it seems to have vanished into thin air. Before you declare your missing file a victim of mysterious deletion, try FileLocator Pro. This powerful search utility has weapons in its arsenal that the standard Windows search can only dream of.

FileLocator Pro's interface isn't fancy, and that's a good thing; it's plain, intuitive, and easy to navigate. The major search parameters are arranged in tabs. There are the usual features--search by location, document type, text within the document, etc.--but FileLocator Pro has plenty of other search options. You can specify date ranges during which the file was created, modified, and last accessed, search within compressed and archived files, and use Boolean search options and file hashing. The program is easy enough for novices to use, but with the more-advanced features that experienced users will expect. In fact, the program can be set to regular or expert mode, allowing easily confused new users to hide the more complex features. The program's Help file is well-written and thorough. Overall, we think FileLocator Pro is a great choice for anyone who needs a powerful search tool.

FileLocator Pro has a 30-day trial period. It installs politely but leaves a folder behind upon removal. We recommend this program to all users.

window.addEvent('domready', function() { $$('div[id^="universalVideo"]').set('styles', { clear: 'none', overflow: 'hidden' }); });

FileLocator Pro allows you to search your computer for all your important data. You can search for ZIP, RAR and CAB files as well as for PDFs, Word documents and more. Also perform searches in your LAN/WAN network drives.

What's new in this version: Version 6.5 build 1348 fixes two text messages not displaying properly.

"First class professionally written program."

December 12, 2008  |   By crisoco

Version: FileLocator Pro 4.5.834

Pros

Searches practically every standard extension file.
Can customise everything to suit.
Quick to search.
Does not hog resources.
No problems downloading or installing.
Helpful support.
Comprehensive help files.

Cons

Very little that I have found so far.
Upgrades after the first year are chargeable but at reduced rate.
It opens up an image file in a default viewer (MS Picture Manager).

Summary

Searches within zip files.
Searches within Excel zipped files.
Searches within Excel text boxes which Copernic and other major search engines will not do.
Shows the search text result and text either side.
Click the text result and it opens up its own viewer for the full detail.
Click the file and it will open up the original file.
Agent Ransack is the freeware lite version of this program but does not have the functionality that this program offers.
I have looked at all the download.com desktop search programs and this is the only one that I can confidently recommend.
XYplorer Free version 5.55 comes a close second but it does not highlight the result and is not able to locate the position of the text within the file. However XYplorer has its own internal viewer for image files.
