Calibre (64-bit)

Quicker than you can turn a page, e-books have gone from a novelty to a publishing mainstay and will soon be the dominant format (perhaps by the time you're reading this). While many book-lovers use handheld e-book devices such as Amazon's Kindle, others read e-books on their tablets or even their smartphones. All you need is a good e-book reader. We tried the 64-bit release of Calibre, the free, open-source reader and library manager. It's a good e-book reader.

Calibre's welcome wizard let us choose from a long list of interface languages. It also prompted us to set up our e-book library by creating a destination folder or browsing to existing e-books. By default, Calibre creates its library folder in your Documents library. Of course, you can change it later, but it's not a bad idea to start with the right folder in the right location, since your e-book collection may grow rapidly when you see what's available for free (or cheap). It's also easy to establish your e-book library on a USB drive, memory card, or external drive. (You can lug your entire library around with you without giving yourself a hernia! Try that with hardbacks.) Next, we set up Calibre to be compatible with our specific e-book gadget. We could choose devices from a list of 15 different manufacturers, including Amazon, Apple, and Barnes & Noble, as well as generic devices such as smartphones and tablets. The setup finished with links to demo videos and an online User Manual. Better yet, Calibre's main interface opens with one free e-book already displayed: "The Calibre Quick-Start Guide." A colorful interface with a familiar layout makes for easy navigation, aided and abetted by icons with easy-to-grasp labels such as Get Books and Fetch News, each with equally clear submenus.

We've got nothing but good things to say about Calibre, whether it's the 32- or 64-bit version. Adding, converting, and removing books, editing metadata, and even sharing our favorite titles all proved to be as easy as a few clicks. Calibre(64-bit) is program to manage your eBook collection. It acts as an e-library and also allows for format conversion, news feeds to eBook conversion, as well as e-book reader sync features and an integrated e-book viewer. It features library management, format conversion (all major eBook formats), syncing to e-book reader devices, fetching news from the Web and converting it into eBook form, viewing many different e-book formats, and giving you access to your book collection over the internet using just a browser.

Q-Dir (64-bit)

Q-Dir (64-bit) from Nenad Hrg is a freeware file manager with some interesting twists. Like other file management utilities, it displays your disk drives, files, folders, and other system information, making it easy to delete, copy, export, rename, and move files and folders. Q-Dir also offers optional context-menu integration and portable operation, but what really sets it apart from other file management tools is its highly flexible interface with "amazing Quadro-View technology." That sounds like something you'd find at the 1951 Motorama, not a 2011 file management utility, but it's actually a useful four-screen interface with variations. This setup lets you view multiple disks or directories simultaneously in one interface, ending desktop clutter and window-juggling. It also simplifies dragging and dropping and other file maintenance.

Q-Dir's default view is the four-pane 4-Dir Quadro-View window, which duplicates all window features and the same basic tree view in each pane. At the end of the program's main menu bar is a series of icons for toggling between its 12 different display configurations, such as 3-Dir (three windows), 2-Dir, horizontal, vertical, and so on, with an optional left-hand navigation panel and system tree view. With four drives on two physical hard disks in our system, Q-Dir's 4-Dir view was perfect for a one-look overview. Once we'd chosen our view, we could set it as the program's default. Each separate window offers a complete Explorer-style interface, so browsing to various folders and files had a familiar feel. Best of all, the clearly separated yet unified view ended the tedious business of resizing and dragging around various open windows or, worse, trying to use the navigation arrows to move between two or more directories. Q-Dir has some useful extras, too, such as a Magnifier tool, and many options relating to how it opens, runs, looks, and performs.

The 64-bit edition Q-Dir is one of the most flexible Windows file managers we've tried, with too many options to describe. There's a Help file if you need it, though its English language version seems to have been the product (or victim) of machine translation, with the occasional smile-provoking phrase. However, nothing about either the program or its documentation was unclear or confusing, and we recommend Q-Dir without reservation.

Q-Dir (64-bit) makes your files and folder easy to manage. It is fast and easy access, with an amazing Quadro-View technique. You don't have to renounce the usual, Drag and Drop, all Views, and other functions of your system. One can save many hand moves and also time. Q-Dir includes the following features like favorites, drag and drop, clipboard, all views, magnifier, color filter, highlight-filter, and quick-links.

What's new in this version: Version 5.66 includes corrections in Q-Dir function autocomplete in the filter entries.

"Actually Awesome"

Pros

Have used and tried all the well known and less known Win Explorer alternatives. It's so lightweight, I just use it whenever I want access to 4 to 20 folders at once. Doing this in windows explorer is just gonna muck your mind up.

Start-up is instantaneous no matter how many tabs in the quad setup. Is likely you'd get lag with any other app.

"here it is an another underrated app"

I am using this almost to the point where I wouldn't mind replacing my windows explorer with this one,

I have 6 or 7 drives on my desktop and when your moving folders from window to window this sure makes life a hell of a lot easier, no more opening windows here and there forgetting what you were doing , where you moved a folder, how big a folder is/was , how much space you have on each drive , etc etc

I really don't get why windows doesn't give you this option of having multiple folders on one screen, forget having to stack folders on top of each other or side to side, this sure saves me a lot of time

very stable love it, 32 and 64 bit versions, portable and full installs available I am using this with windows 8 release preview 64 bit no issues whatsoever

this could really use a facelift, the options available are a joke ( even the author calls them "a joke" lol

some extra options would be nice, a faster copier mover, perhaps undelete , find empty folders, find files below a certain length , a faster search, folder permiions

if one or any of these is already available then I wasn't able to find them,

if I couldn't find them then that's a con ;-)

You _can_ add portable version to shell context menu, if you run it as administrator.

Search function "In the foreseeable future", now it uses Windows Search.

Opened zip file and it created a folder with waht appears to be an application but windows XP says it is not a valid one.

I used the link in the full description to get to http://www.softwareok.com/ which appears to have less versions than on www.cnet.com., and tried the installer programs. This produced a version that appears to work and shows up on my list of programs. More clarity on which version/installation method can be used on what sort of platform is probably needed in the descriptions on www.cnet.com.

CurrPorts (64-bit) will display the list of all currently opened TCP/IP and UDP ports on your PC. For each port in the list, information about the process that opened the port is also displayed, including the process name, full path of the process, version information of the process (product name, file description), the time that the process was created, and the user that created it.
