JetVideo Basic VX

JetVideo Basic VX from COWOM America proved a capable, flexible media player, once we'd gotten past an ad-splashed intro that left us wondering if it was worth the effort. It has a sleek, stylish interface that groups lots of useful controls together but hides them until you need them, or toggles them open and closed, like the Extended Controls and Playlist. It plays a wide range of media files, including music files and CDs, as well as most video formats. Its extras include sound effects, subtitles for international users, an equalizer, variable playback speed, a timer, an alarm, a video converter, and a YouTube video downloader.

JetVideo Basic VX opened with its Information Viewer, a player-like interface displaying a minimal border and a series of ads in its main view. We searched for but did not find any means to open or add a file or folder and start playing videos on this ad tool. It wasn't until this window minimized itself to the system tray that we were able to access the program's main menu and open the player by loading a file. The main menu actually offers a lot, including Disc and File Modes, Sound and Visualization settings, DirectShow configuration, screen options, and a long submenu of Basic Controls. Opening a file uncovered a full suite of controls on the player's interface. The controls display subtle blue shading and highlighting that gives it a cool "late-night" effect; more importantly, they do useful things like toggle Always-on-Top.

JetVideo Basic VX proved as capable of playing our videos and tunes as most top-flight media players, and it has a lot going for it in terms of options. It looks good, too. But it needs a more user-friendly startup procedure, to mention one thing, and it's a little clunky in places; for example, the system tray icon isn't always accessible, even when the program is minimized to the taskbar. It's certainly a viable option to other free media players, including a few that are highly regarded for their performance but not their looks.

JetAudio Basic

JetAudio is the software component of Cowon's media players and devices. It's available as a free media player for Windows under the name of JetAudio Basic. It's anything but basic, though. In addition to being a stylish and capable player that can handle most file types, JetAudio Basic includes audio and video converters, audio CD burning and ripping, sound recording, skins, Internet broadcasting via JetCast, and other fun and useful JetToys. New to JetAudio 8 is an integrated GUI with optional Media Center Interface.

When we first ran JetAudio, we clicked the Choose Windows Configuration option from the Cowon Media Center folder on the Start Menu. The first page asks how you want to use JetAudio, with main window, toolbar, and Media Center combinations optimized for music, video, or file management. We chose the default options.

The Media Center interface is more substantial than a typical player-playlist setup, more closely resembling an Explorer program than a media tool (and a refreshing change from another Media Center we won't mention). The top panel is JetAudio's media player; it's a good-looking unit, too, with a blue-glass look and a spectral display. In the default view, the sidebar tree view doesn't navigate Explorer but the Media Center's features. But we could open My Computer and Portable Devices from controls next to the player interface. Many users may opt just to use the slender, optional toolbar, which autofits to the top or bottom of the screen and can be dragged around the desktop. We ran the configuration tool again and tried this and other interface options; each has something to recommend it.

JetAudio also scanned our system for media files when we first ran it. The Media Center interface displayed crisp, clear video playback, even with Flash videos saved from online. Of course, JetAudio really shines in playing and organizing your music collection, though audio and video quality largely depends on your audio and video cards and other variables. If we had one complaint, it's that the numerous controls sometimes aren't intuitive in layout or labeling. But JetAudio offers a real Media Center alternative with tons of extras, and it belongs on your short list.

JetAudio plays various music and video files. Features included are: CD Burning, Recording, and File Conversion. You can create Internet Broadcasts with JetCast. JetAudio plays most major file formats and various video or audio tracks. You can even convert audio files to various formats. A special feature is Video conversion which can make video files compatible for your portable devices such as iPOD or PSP. Other features include: sound effects (Wide, Reverb, and X-Bass), multichannel sound output, speed control for audio playback, cross-fading, skin changes, and synchronized lyric display for MIDI.

What's new in this version: Version 8.1.1.2010 removed Video Conversion / mp3PRO encoder; requires LAME MP3 encoder for mp3 encoding (downloadable from free-codecs.com); supports madVR & xySubFilter; improves EQ.

Users can choose to recover a file password, recover Internet and network passwords, reset the Windows administrator password, or search the computer for protected files. We tried the program with several types of Microsoft Office documents, and it worked fine, as far as we could tell. Short, easy passwords were recovered quickly, but passwords that were a mix of numbers and letters exceeded the maximum search time of one minute for the trial version of the software; the last recovery we tried was estimated to take five days.
