Calibre is a program to manage your eBook collection. It acts as an e-library and also allows for format conversion, news feeds to eBook conversion, as well as e-book reader sync features and an integrated e-book viewer. "Program deletes files without warning"

Cumbersome way to organize files putting each one in separate folder. The most serious problem is that the program may automatically delete your document without warning. Later when you try to access the document, you discover it no longer exists. I have had this program delete documents multiple times. It does not give you the option of a warning but just does it. This is a very significant problem and users need to be aware of it.

"Crashed for the 6th time"

Pros

The management tool is fantastic. I like the fact you can customize the plug-ins for this allowing you to modify the program to best use. It makes modifying the Metadata very easy as well as renaming and tagging files. The library feature is very nice because you can set up various libraries to hold books. For example I have a Fiction, Non Fiction, as well as a few others making it easy to organize. I also modified it to let me put Genre on it instead of using the tags

Cons

It crashed AGAIN. The only program I have that crashes more is Adobe Digital Reader. Every 3rd or 4th time I modify a file, it locks up and I have to use Alt/Ctrl/delete to get out of it. It has severe emotional problems when I add a larger ebook selection to it as well as when I move ebooks. At least it doesn't crash when I do that, yet. It wants to be too many things therefore it hogs resources. I can't run anything else when I run something like conversion. Frankly I get sick of staring at the program struggling to process the conversion for minutes on end. 15 minutes is my limit and I'll stop the program just to get out of it. When you ask a question, you get 'Calibre' speak which, I'm sorry, normal humans don't want to deal with. We just want the program to work. It sounds more like hedging than answers. Lots of new gadgets, lots of features but nothing needed for a good management system.

Summary

It's no longer fast, easy and fun. The program is trying to be everything to everyone instead of what it should be, a simple management program with an attached ereader. It is the only choice at the moment so you are stuck with it if you want to do intensive management and convert files easily. If I was offered a good alternative, I would even pay for the alternative just so I wouldn't have to deal with Calibre's problems. If you have a life and don't want to learn Calibre speak, it isn't the program for you.

"Is NOT a reader. Only organizes."

None so far. I keep all of my files organized. Well I guess it's cool that you see the book covers.

Only downloaded this because I thought it was a reader, but it's not. If it was a reader and I didn't have to download a separate program to actually open my books it would be great. As it is, it's like iTunes with out a music player. just a program to keep everything organized...which is what file directories are for. No need to make a book playlist.

Think iTunes if iTunes didn't play music. It's just a library and it can sync to other devices.

"Packed with adware!!"

I've always felt confident with using CNET's download.com previously, but downloading Calibre brought all kinds of adware to my computer. That's with me deselecting all of their free offers. I'm not sure if I've found all of it yet. Beware!!

"Combines some nice features with some BIG problems."

Pros

Imports books easily, decent reader, with special DRM-stripper plug-in allows backing up of Nook and Kindle files. Easy to learn and use, with a farily intuitive interface, and good on-board documentation. Allows metadata to be edited (but saves in a separate file, so you can't move the new metadata back to your reader). And, it's free.

Cons

The biggest con is that this program is a resource hog. I've found dozens of users who have posted on the web about this, users of both PCs and Macs. This is especially bad when doing book conversions: Calibre runs CPU usage up to 100% on all cores, and gloms onto 2Gb or more of RAM. The net effect is that you can't use any other programs while Calibre conversion is running, or the CPU overheats and the system locks-up.

When this problem was brought to the attention of the developers, they declared it "invalid", and dismissed the issue out of hand.

Summary

This has the potential to be a very good program. Unfortunately, the huge (and apparently unmodifyable)resource requirement for conversion will render the software useless for that function on many users' systems. This, coupled with the unresponsiveness of the developers, has caused me to lower my rating by two stars, and abandon the software.

There is other free eBook software out there, and until Calibre fixes the resource-hog issue, I will be supporting that other software.

"Great Product"

Pros

Best piece of software I've used in years!

After writing a book I wanted to put it on my Kindle and Calibre was great. However, intially I saved my book as a pdf and imported it to Calibre and then onto my Kindel. The problem with this was, 1. I couldn't adjust the font size and 2. every two lines was followed by a space. The solution was to save my word document as a HTML. This worked great! Well done Calibre.

Not only does this program convert seamlessly from epub to mobi, it now has a built-in editor.
Fabulous that I can connect my Kindle and manage my books from Calibre.

Cons

None that I have found. OK, so books bought from Amazon has DRM which the program respects.

Summary

This is one indispensable program for anyone with a large book collection. And anyone who has a Kindle but has friends who read on their iPads!
I love the fact that I can tag my books which means that if I've forgotten the name of the author (happens often!)but know it's a book on wildlife, it's a doddle to find what I'm looking for.

Converts formats for me. Also loads periodical publications I read. I don't use it for my book library or reader but it does a great job of doing what I use it for.

Cons

It does many things more than I need, but it seems to be a one program for all functions. Some people may find it hard or confusing.

What I like about this software above all the other forms of ebook publishing software is that it lets you use bullet points and images with no problem. Format all your text nicely in Word (H1, H2, page breaks, etc) and the fast conversion gives you a great epub document in seconds.

Cons

Don't like the way it handles Table Of COntents but create it in Word first.

Calibre Portable

Managing collections of books (we'll call them "libraries") used to be easier. E-books introduce new complexity. Thanks to competing formats and technologies, e-books that play on one e-reader might not on another, even when it's supposed to be compatible. Calibre Portable is a free e-book manager that not only serves as an e-library but also converts electronic text between various formats. It also handles a wide range of e-readers.

Since it's portable freeware, you can save Calibre Portable's program folder virtually anywhere, though we had to relocate the database folder after saving the program to one disk and running it on another, which could be an issue in some systems. We've seen every style of e-book manager, and many use 3D graphics and game-style functionality to add the "feel" of handling real books. But Calibre's basic Explorer layout is refreshingly familiar, making it very easy to add books from our existing collection, get new titles online, edit metadata, and perform other functions.

The left-side panel numbered and categorized our collection by Authors, Languages, Series, Formats, Publishers, Tags, and other identifiers, and we could sort, match, and manage titles in various ways. Selecting a title in the central list window displayed its metadata and cover image in the right-side panel. The download includes one title, "Calibre Quick-Start Guide" (there's also an excellent manual accessible from the Help button). We were more interested in the "Convert books" button, though. Clicking it with a title selected opened an impressive, comprehensive wizard that not only converts formats but also configures Metadata, Look & Feel, Heuristic Processing, Page Setup, Structure Detection, and other aspects of the program. There's even a Debug feature.

With thousands of free titles available and soaring sales, the e-book market is poised to take off, once it sorts itself out. Until that day comes, e-book lovers will need tools like Calibre Portable to help them get the most out of their collections and accommodate the ever-changing parade of e-reader technology. This sophisticated freeware seems capable of handling whatever books you can throw at it without ducking.

Quicker than you can turn a page, e-books have gone from a novelty to a publishing mainstay and will soon be the dominant format (perhaps by the time you're reading this). While many book-lovers use handheld e-book devices such as Amazon's Kindle, others read e-books on their tablets or even their smartphones. All you need is a good e-book reader. We tried the 64-bit release of Calibre, the free, open-source reader and library manager. It's a good e-book reader.

Calibre's welcome wizard let us choose from a long list of interface languages. It also prompted us to set up our e-book library by creating a destination folder or browsing to existing e-books. By default, Calibre creates its library folder in your Documents library. Of course, you can change it later, but it's not a bad idea to start with the right folder in the right location, since your e-book collection may grow rapidly when you see what's available for free (or cheap). It's also easy to establish your e-book library on a USB drive, memory card, or external drive. (You can lug your entire library around with you without giving yourself a hernia! Try that with hardbacks.) Next, we set up Calibre to be compatible with our specific e-book gadget. We could choose devices from a list of 15 different manufacturers, including Amazon, Apple, and Barnes & Noble, as well as generic devices such as smartphones and tablets. The setup finished with links to demo videos and an online User Manual. Better yet, Calibre's main interface opens with one free e-book already displayed: "The Calibre Quick-Start Guide." A colorful interface with a familiar layout makes for easy navigation, aided and abetted by icons with easy-to-grasp labels such as Get Books and Fetch News, each with equally clear submenus.

The GUI has been smartened up for its birthday. It's useful for anything having to do with eBooks: Reading, cataloging, editing, creating and converting eBooks. No other program is this capable and comprehensive for its purposes. It's a terrific blessing for the Mac community.

Then there are the added bells and whistles: Click the 'Fetch news' button and ogle. Then check out the Fetch news settings for adding your own news sources and scheduling downloads. This is for reelz! Then delve into tutorials and notice the depth of capability of this application.

The developer is terrific and very dedicated. He is constantly improving Calibre and adding features.

Cons

It has a learning curve and can be overwhelming to a newbie. The GUI can be confusing as it offers so much capability in one window.

I personally would provide the manual with every download. However, we are considered an Internet connected world, so downloading the latest version of the manual from the net can be an advantage.

The GUI elements used to be very plain, but recently they've spruced up nicely.

Summary

Calibre is a hefty gem, weighing in at about 250 MB, worth every byte! This has to be one of the most remarkably capable and important free programs in the Mac hemisphere. Highly recommended to one and all who enjoy reading, cataloguing, editing, creating and converting eBooks!

Don't virtually touch an eBook without it.

Incredibly grateful thanks to the remarkable developer of Calibre and his dedicated work on this terrific software project. (^_^)

This is a great little program with a lot of options that seems to get regularly updated. I really don't understand the complaints about bad visuals or complex options. Are you familiar with computers, the concept of buttons, drop down menus, and directories? Then, you'll be fine. If you are only comfortable with dragging and dropping, you may be in trouble, but five minutes spent reading should cure that.

I downloaded it and installed it within five minutes and had converted 15 files and transferred them to my device within eight minutes of installation. No issues with formatting, but if I had, there are tools to adjust the formatting and a manual that explains these tools in detail.

As I have many books that aren't in a format for iTunes and my iPad, this will become my ebook library.

Cons

It's tough to figure out how to use it. A tutorial, simpler interface, or something like it is needed to make it live up to its true potential.

Fails to automatically look at original document, to then set conversion defaults. The result is a document with lines too long or too short.

The bigger problem is that this doesn't work like other Mac programs, you can't drop a file on the application, it takes FOREVER to load, and there is no obvious logic to follow to change a .PDF file to an eBook.

Summary

I'd be delighted to pay real money to someone who turns the underlying engine into a real Mac program.

I converted the e-book file to be kindle-compatible, and then installed it on my kindle. It basically killed my kindle, and I am unable to start it up. I've tried all the tricks to get it working again, but to no avail.

I have thousands of digitized books in PDF format on my old Mac which I thought I was going to lose. This program allowed me to batch convert these files to text files which I will be able to use on whatever system I get to replace my dying computer.

The GUI has been smartened up for its birthday. It's useful for anything having to do with eBooks: Reading, cataloging, editing, creating and converting eBooks. No other program is this capable and comprehensive for its purposes. It's a terrific blessing for the Mac community.

Then there are the added bells and whistles: Click the 'Fetch news' button and ogle. Then check out the Fetch news settings for adding your own news sources and scheduling downloads. This is for reelz! Then delve into tutorials and notice the depth of capability of this application.

The developer is terrific and very dedicated. He is constantly improving Calibre and adding features.

Cons

It has a learning curve and can be overwhelming to a newbie. The GUI can be confusing as it offers so much capability in one window.

I personally would provide the manual with every download. However, we are considered an Internet connected world, so downloading the latest version of the manual from the net can be an advantage.

The GUI elements used to be very plain, but recently they've spruced up nicely.

Summary

Calibre is a hefty gem, weighing in at about 250 MB, worth every byte! This has to be one of the most remarkably capable and important free programs in the Mac hemisphere. Highly recommended to one and all who enjoy reading, cataloguing, editing, creating and converting eBooks!

Don't virtually touch an eBook without it.

Incredibly grateful thanks to the remarkable developer of Calibre and his dedicated work on this terrific software project. (^_^)

This is a great little program with a lot of options that seems to get regularly updated. I really don't understand the complaints about bad visuals or complex options. Are you familiar with computers, the concept of buttons, drop down menus, and directories? Then, you'll be fine. Quicker than you can turn a page, e-books have gone from a novelty to a publishing mainstay and will soon be the dominant format (perhaps by the time you're reading this). While many book-lovers use handheld e-book devices such as Amazon's Kindle, others read e-books on their tablets or even their smartphones. All you need is a good e-book reader. We tried the 64-bit release of Calibre, the free, open-source reader and library manager. It's a good e-book reader.

Calibre's welcome wizard let us choose from a long list of interface languages. It also prompted us to set up our e-book library by creating a destination folder or browsing to existing e-books. By default, Calibre creates its library folder in your Documents library. Of course, you can change it later, but it's not a bad idea to start with the right folder in the right location, since your e-book collection may grow rapidly when you see what's available for free (or cheap). It's also easy to establish your e-book library on a USB drive, memory card, or external drive. (You can lug your entire library around with you without giving yourself a hernia! Try that with hardbacks.) Next, we set up Calibre to be compatible with our specific e-book gadget. We could choose devices from a list of 15 different manufacturers, including Amazon, Apple, and Barnes & Noble, as well as generic devices such as smartphones and tablets. The setup finished with links to demo videos and an online User Manual. Better yet, Calibre's main interface opens with one free e-book already displayed: "The Calibre Quick-Start Guide." A colorful interface with a familiar layout makes for easy navigation, aided and abetted by icons with easy-to-grasp labels such as Get Books and Fetch News, each with equally clear submenus.

The left-side panel numbered and categorized our collection by Authors, Languages, Series, Formats, Publishers, Tags, and other identifiers, and we could sort, match, and manage titles in various ways. Selecting a title in the central list window displayed its metadata and cover image in the right-side panel. The download includes one title, "Calibre Quick-Start Guide" (there's also an excellent manual accessible from the Help button). We were more interested in the "Convert books" button, though. Calibre Portable

Managing collections of books (we'll call them "libraries") used to be easier. E-books introduce new complexity. Thanks to competing formats and technologies, e-books that play on one e-reader might not on another, even when it's supposed to be compatible. Calibre Portable is a free e-book manager that not only serves as an e-library but also converts electronic text between various formats. It also handles a wide range of e-readers.

Since it's portable freeware, you can save Calibre Portable's program folder virtually anywhere, though we had to relocate the database folder after saving the program to one disk and running it on another, which could be an issue in some systems. We've seen every style of e-book manager, and many use 3D graphics and game-style functionality to add the "feel" of handling real books. But Calibre's basic Explorer layout is refreshingly familiar, making it very easy to add books from our existing collection, get new titles online, edit metadata, and perform other functions.

The left-side panel numbered and categorized our collection by Authors, Languages, Series, Formats, Publishers, Tags, and other identifiers, and we could sort, match, and manage titles in various ways. Selecting a title in the central list window displayed its metadata and cover image in the right-side panel. The download includes one title, "Calibre Quick-Start Guide" (there's also an excellent manual accessible from the Help button). We were more interested in the "Convert books" button, though. Calibre provides all the elements you need to organize and manage an e-book collection. With a simple set of tools and a helpful layout, this program is a nice choice for any electronic reading lover.

The program's interface is a snap to understand because of its professionally designed layout and easy-to-use command icons. Calibre lets you open a variety of e-book types and read them. You download your e-books from your desktop or hard drive directly into Calibre. The entire process is so simple that we never felt the need to consult the Help file. You can easily sort your titles by alphabetical order, cover image, or tags. We especially like being able to customize tags and covers, which is handy if the book doesn't come with any. While all these functions worked well, the program didn't feel like an essential utility until we tried out its special features, which elevate Calibre from a mere reader into an e-book manager. The conversion feature converts any e-book's file type with a few clicks, which we like because some handheld readers only accept specific file types. The uploading feature lets you send your e-books directly to one of those handheld readers or other portable device with equal ease. Calibre covered every base, from downloading and cataloging our electronic book collection to putting the words in the palm of our hand.

Calibre is freeware. It installs desktop icons without permission. We loved its simple operation and impressive results, and we recommend this program.
