"OK for $200. Good for $100"

October 26, 2011  |   By jsh999

Version: ESF Database Migration Toolkit Standard Edition 7.2.05

Pros

Lots of datasources. It works pretty good for my Oracle-to-Postgres.

Cons

Oracle to Postgres generally good but BLOB to bytea doesn't work....causes tool to hang. Not sure what other gotchas I will hit when using binary or esoteric data types.

Interface is "small" give me a maximized window with a menu.

No basic SQL translation although that would be a pretty good tool.

Summary

Looks decent for a data ETL tool. Lots of datsources and trial run with Oracle/SQL Server/Postgres not bad. if these guys keep working on this, could be great. Not many other tools that do postgres and all the other datasources. 3 things to make it a killer app. 1. Clean up the binary data types and make sure other data types work well (they seem too), 2. Add SQL translation (like for Views and maybe Table Triggers) and its a killer app. 3. Make the interface bigger...felt like I was working in a tunnel :)

Updated on Oct 27, 2011

UPDATE: Reported my bug with Oracle-2-Postgres BLOB-2-Bytea hang... they got back with me immediately....gave them data and circumstances. They discovered the bug (Null BLOBs) and created a point release patch version for me....this all in less than 24 hours. So good stuff! Still they need to add window sizability, a menu, ability to save migration "Profile/Settings" for later use and it will be a fuller product...but lots of great potential here and great service!

"Install, Review Database Update at CNET?"

November 23, 2008  |   By Dave Dinmore

Version: Protector Plus Virus Database 8.0.D48

Pros

CNET seems to be confused over this. Why would someone who has a subscription to a software program go to CNET to download Or review updates to the database? (I can understand reviewing new versions of the product).

Cons

The current database for Protector Plus is indeed 8.0.D48. The current product version is 8.0.D02. The latter is what should be reviewed.

Summary

CNET should put Protector Plus product version 8.0.D02 up for review and eliminate reviews on virus signature updates.

Database Browser

3.0 stars

"Ok - not bad, but not great"

October 13, 2011  |   By michalgloc

Version: Database Browser 3.3.1.2

Pros

Free, simple to use and works for the most part, can connect to oracle with just TNS.

Cons

First of all it has some problem with timouts or connections or something, because it keeps freezing for a while when I click it after not using it for a while. At this point it sometimes crashes too! There is also no recovery for QSL code you used. Limited features, interface bit annoying (eg. you need to scroll down to read status output for you command, it doesn't stay-at-bottom), lacks list of items exeisting on the db except for tables (for example cant see sequences), no sql help/autocomplete and it doesn't point to which part of your query the error applies to, there is no line numbering, code folding.

Summary

Generally it's good enough if you need simple browser for small db and you don't use any complex sql. For anything more you need a better software. I didn't have to pay for it, so I shouldn't complain too much. As far as free db apps it's not bad, but it has some problems. If you got used to some commercial software (eg. AutaData Studio) then using this is a bit painful at times.

"Must-have database tool"

May 9, 2008  |   By rkapl

Version: Database Browser 2.2.1

Pros

First the easy, immediate viewing of table/view data from the main window. Our Excel-savvy users like that to check field names, field content and summaries (filtering, sorting, like excel)

Then the highly flexible query builder, which is not only needful for beginners, but also for advanced users (even subqueries can be done graphically, a separate tab is created for those)

Besides that you even get direct editing capabilities on your data.

"Database Browser Portable is the DB tool for our times!"

May 23, 2011  |   By mkolb01

Version: Database Browser Portable 3.2.2.23

Pros

A great tool for the management of SQL databases in an intuitive format that can be placed on a USB stick. The tool launches quickly. Integration with your environment is easy because of the command line interface.

Cons

Like all DB tools it takes a bit of configuring to hook up to your unique environment.

Summary

We use DBPortable because it lacks very little over more expensive tools from established vendors. It is integrated to our tools distribution at WebLaminar.com because it works. It has been successfully tested in Enterprise environments and we love it.

MIke and the team at DBSL are responsive to user suggestions as they were with our needs and you can't put a price on that. You have nothing to loose and everything to gain by trying this product.

The Ultimate Troubleshooter 4.92 Database 22.06.2012 Portable

The Ultimate Troubleshooter 4.92 Database 22.06.2012 Portable | 24.4 Mb
A staggering 65% of problems which a PC encounters (lockups, crashes, blue screens of death, computer is running slow, sluggish PC), whether in business or at home, are not caused by hardware problems, they are not caused by viruses, they are not caused by spyware — they are caused by background tasks belonging largely to legitimate and well-known software you use every day !

The average PC has 25 or more background tasks which do not need to be running, all sucking up processor time and memory resources. 25 or more !

For example : perhaps you have a laptop which works wirelessly in your home with no problems whatsoever. However, when you take it on your travels you are unable to connect to any wireless network. You’re frustrated, you’ve asked a friend to help, you’ve been to the PC repair store — and still no joy — you can use wireless only in your own home !! This is where The Ultimate Troubleshooter (TUT) comes in : load it, and immediately it identifies for you the background task which is causing this nightmare. And the irony : the wireless router installation CD sent to you by your Internet Service Provider installed that task, and, naturally, you never suspected it might be the cause of all your problems.

Features:
· Understand everything that is running on your PC in the background: who makes that program, what its purpose in life is, whether you need that program, whether you may need that program, or whether it is downright harmful.
· You will be able to do all this without endlessly going back and forth to our Task List pages all the information in our Task List pages, and 30% more, is within The Ultimate Troubleshooter, your own portable Task List reference.
· The Ultimate Troubleshooter will clearly highlight whether a particular background task is advertising software, or, worse, software that spies on your PC. Most importantly, The Ultimate Troubleshooter avoids speaking to you in technical jargon in favour of explaining things in Plain Language which both occasional users and professional users will understand.
· You should always use a good antivirus program on your PC. However, even if you do not, as an added bonus The Ultimate Troubleshooter will identify up to 60% of the most common viruses.
· The Ultimate Troubleshooter will tell you clearly what you should do if you do not need a particular background task, and, in most cases, you will be able to disable that task right there within The Ultimate Troubleshooter.
· And there is lots more: if there should be a task which The Ultimate Troubleshooter picks up but for which it has no reference material, it will tell you and you can in turn decide to let us know at a touch of a button, in the exact same manner that our own consultants do when at clients.
· Also, if you want to know what is in your PC, The Ultimate Troubleshooter will tell you everything you need to know about your PC : hard disk, memory, graphics card, modem, network card, motherboard, CPU, etc, etc...
· We have now added a Housekeeping module which performs most of the file system maintenance tasks outlined in our famous "Regular Housekeeping" document. This module will allow you, through a few simple mouse clicks, to unclog your PC of endless temporary files, of left-over data from your Internet sessions, of traces of the web pages you visited, and more, so that you can at all times run a mean and lean PC !
· Corporate and Professional network troubleshooters will also love what we know are the world's best PING, Trace Route, and WHOIS functions. For years we used third party programs for our network troubleshooting assignments but none had all the features we wanted in PING, Trace Route, and WHOIS modules, so we recently developed our own and included all the features we had wanted for so long, and the result is the best that can be found anywhere.
