"Good, but not fully replacing Eudora."

Pros

easy to install. works fast.

Cons

I'm missing several interesting features of Eudora, still my favorite email client:
- redirecting (extremely useful)
- on server & delete from server
- multiple signatures (add-on doesn't work well)
- very important to me: Thunderbird doesn't allow changing an incoming message (e.g. removing unneeded space, correcting typos)
Moving a message out of in-box should delete it on server: doesn't always work.

Summary

Didn'd find anything better yet to replace good old Eudora Mail

"Sorry, Mozilla - You lost control of the code.."

Pros

It works fine with MacOS 10.6.8 - Snow Leopard, those who cannot install it has a problem with their config.
IMAP - e.g. to Gmail works fine.
POP/POP3 to ISP works fine
Lots of Add-ons, including stationary, "Quicktext" that allows fast insertion of standard phrases, variables - such as "Date", "Sender" - had it all worked it would be excellent.
Version 16 supports chat, and replace iChat, Lightening, the calendar software is good.
Version 17 - tested a beta version, is bigger and slower.

Cons

It contains numerous bugs, some are related to the interface to the indexing file system, most to silly large meta-database in iSQL with multiple definition of the same things - such as a Deleted message can be read/unread - and a read message, can that also be :new" - makes me wonder if anyone is in charge of design.
The result is an email client that introduce inconsistencies to the extent that it looses data - messages are lost, entire folder of messages gets lost. File a bug report, and you get a confused developer that doubts your issue, and claims "this has been solved in the next release" - and then add on more functionality.

Summary

If you need an email client with tons of functionality, numerous chat protocols, gimmicks, bells and whistles, this is perfect. But a code that used to be good, stable and reliable is moving out of control.

Have used Thunderbird for over a year, but now ???

Cons

Dropped Outlook for Thunderbird. After upgrading yesterday to 14.0 > Now back to Outlook. Come on gentlemen - VERY UNSTABLE, would suggest NOT to D/L this until all bugs are fixed. Run mouse over messages and they disappear - Kind of feel like a magician. When I say disappear, I don't mean not available, you just can't see the subject on the top 2 or 3 messages. Then God forbid you page down, it is all screwed up!!! System OS X Leopard Version 10.6.8

Summary

Suggest waiting until bugs are fixed!

"Does what it should!"

Pros

Works fine on all email accounts I need to access. Sharing Calendar extension a major plus.

Cons

Still crashes now and again. Synchronising Tasks should be enabled.
Otherwise it'd be a 5 star rating

Summary

Excellent tool to download, organise and Search your emails.
Set-up not for newbies or those too lazy to read instructions!

None because it won't open in OSX 10.4.11

Cons

Thunderbird message said there's an update available. Presuming they know what they're doing, I took it. Now Thunderbird won't open because I'm on OSX 10.4.11. Come one guys even Microsoft checks the O/S version before they do an install / update!

Summary

Do NOT download this if you're on OSX 10.4.11 or earlier! If you do, go back to their site and choose Other Languages, find English US, and re-install 3.1.14. Geez!

I've loved Thunderbird for Mac for a long time but with this new 6.0 release, it's pretty bad. On the surface it looks like the same old Thunderbird with all my layouts and settings retained... but when you actually start to USE it and receive voicemail mp3 attachments and switch back and forth between folders containing a lot of messages, etc. the stability and speed I come to rely on just isn't there with this new version. The previous version was very fast and almost NEVER crashed on me but so far this one has only been out for a couple weeks and I've had it crash at least 3 times. Unacceptable.

Summary

I like the idea of Thunderbird so much that I keep going back to it, hoping the bugs have shaken out. I have five separate email accounts I use for work, and it's nice to have them all in one place. However, the program is just too buggy to be useful. I spend a lot of time waiting for it to recover from freezing up while I compose, and other programs have problems while I have it open, too. You should try it out, though. The good may outweigh the bad for you.

"No alternatives"

Fast, excellent IMAP client.

Cons

Minor things.
Why is default index order chronological, not reverse ditto?
Search comes fixed as excerpts, I'd like it to come as a list.
In comparison, every client will have something you'd like differently.

Summary

I am IT solution provider, with 400+ users.

I use Thunderbird+IMAP for my own mail. For Windows it is simply the best there is. Or rather, I have tried many, though the last year or so, Thunderbird has given me no reason to spend the time.

Unfortunately, almost all my served users use must use Outlook. Corp. decision. Is just on the edge of usable/unusable (for IMAP only - POP and Exchange is fine). Slow, unpredictable behavior, temporarily hangs.

So, those without Exchange is forced to run POP, with the well-known limitations this protocol have.

I have yet to see any real competitor to Thunderbird+IMAP on Windows.

"Great feature set and stability"

Pros

Very very fast compared to Outlook 2013, supports chat and has the extensibility only a Mozilla product (or Google Chrome) can provide. The interface is no-nonsense and useful to the extreme.

Cons

No Exchange Support. Also, while scanning your Google account (dunno about other IMAP accounts), if it finds tens of thousands of emails, it'll take a long while to download all of them for offline viewing (as the default options are set to do). It'll also repeatedly download these mails. Hence, while setting up the account, it is advisable to click manual config > advanced config and set the number of mails to synchronize at around 1000 or so, or for the last 15 days.

Summary

The product is a must-have for people who need a desktop email client. Competitors are either immature (e.g. Postbox) or very bloated and slow (e.g. Microsoft Outlook). The IM integration alone sets it apart from the other clients I've tried, and while people do like a dedicated IM client like Pidgin or Digsby, I prefer having all my communication in one program, which remains light and extensible according to my preferences. Thunderbird delivers.

I have a email that reads 12/31/1969 4:00 P.M.there is nothing there other then that date and time cant get rid of it

"V17 has some kind of style problem"

- I've been using it for years so I'm used to it.
- It's easy to set up accounts for all the services I use.

Cons

Can't seem to use the same Windows style I'm using.

Summary

I just got a notice today of an upgrade to version 17. Went ahead and installed it, and now suddenly the interface looks different; apparently it is not using the Windows style I have set up and I can't find a way to change it either in the Menu or Options. This may be a bug, but trying to find a place on Mozilla's huge website to report it or even ask about it just takes too long so I went back to V16, and the style has returned. With these frequent and unpredictable updates (version *17*?) I really wish there was a decent alternative...

"looks promising, fails miserably"

nice interface
mostly easy to use

Cons

lost the very first email someone else sent to me. Gone. Did some online research, and it's a known issue with massive work-arounds that are seriously not worth the risk or effort.

Simple stuff is made way too complicated (like formatting a signature - basic task that required googling and a work around again)

Summary

If you like to dabble in free software, and don't mind risking losing some mail here and there, go for it.
If you actually need a reliable mail program, look elsewhere. Thunderbird has failed me on day one, first email! So disappointed as I'd come to really respect Mozilla. Other bugs could be overlooked, but losing mail just can't.

"could not figure out how to import from WLM"

Apparently needed 3rd-party add-on to import from WLM. Installed it. "Import everything" got to "Import from" panel with no choices! Clicking "Next" on that panel did nothing. Tried other "import" options. Instructions were confusing. Tried something and got "script stopped running" error panel.

Summary

Not worth more of my time. Uninstalled after one hour and went back to WLM.

Very easy to use. It is also quite intuative, good job designers.

Cons

I wish it had a one button, ie. 'Spam Button' where you could high-light a spam e-mail, and hit the spam button and it filters out those e-mails sent from the same source--forever. Having to go through the steps of setting up manual filtes 20 times a day sux.

Summary

I have used Thunderbird for a couple of years and have up-dated it every time I can and I love it. Great program, and again, cudos designers!!
