Contrary to popular belief, diaries aren't just for teenage girls. Keeping a diary--or journal, if you prefer--is a great way to keep track not only of your most private thoughts, but also of work activities, food logs, travel, and much more. Efficient Diary Portable is a feature-packed program that lets users create custom diary entries and take them along on a portable device--all with password protection, of course.

The program's interface is sleek and attractive, and we had no trouble getting around. A tree hierarchy on the left lets you access entries from the current day, current month, current year, last seven days, last 30 days, or a particular year. Entries can also be assigned to different groups, making it easy to organize around specific themes. We liked the actual diary entry interface a lot; it contains lots of word processing features such as text formatting and the option to insert images and attach documents. A drop-down menu lets you quickly make note of your mood or the current weather. A powerful search feature helps find entries based on their title or content.

The program comes with a built-in Help file but we couldn't get any of its contents to load; this wasn't a serious problem, as everything about the program is easy to figure out. Overall, we liked Efficient Diary Portable a lot, and we think it's a great choice for both personal and professional use.

"good program"

Pros

It works perfectly. I use as a notes organizer - just set it to 'group view' instead of 'date view' and I'm good to go. I'm able to make folders for notes, subfolders too.

I'm using it on Windows 7.

Cons

none really.

Summary

Once every rare ocassion a small window comes up when you first open the program which says there's a pay for version.

I don't mind it since the program is really good and I'm keeping it since it's not worth throwing it away for such a rare occurence.

"Doesn't Work"

Nothing at all.

Cons

The program doesn't save diary entries. As soon as you close the program everything youv'e written in it is gone. When you re-open the program and try to access entries youv'e made you just get a message saying the file has been locked by the program. The file exists, but the program won't give you permission to access any entries youv'e made.

Summary

I was looking for a proper diary software, not too comfy with the cloud versions. Efficient Diary seems to fit the bill for me thus far. I can create entries for previous dates, make changes to the present one, find a diary entry using search, and the best part --- it is password protected too :)

"Says your data is encrypted. It's not"

Data is stored in plain text. Their website and help file both say that your data is encrypted. I e-mailed the company asking about this, but I have not heard back from them yet.

Summary

It's great, if you don't need your data to be private. Yes, you have to have a password to open the diary from within the program, but anyone can just open the data file in a text editor and see everything you've written.

It looks like you can have it encrypt the files, but it's not the default and it's not obvious how to turn it on. Check the box under Tools->Options->Action Confirmation called "Prompt me to confirm encryption when closing a file". If you have this checked, then when you close the program, it will ask you if you want to encrypt your diary file.

One other issue I noticed: The program never seems to completely quit. After I close it, if I look in the Task Manager, there is still a process called EfficientDiary.exe, using about 12 MB of memory. I noticed this because I was trying to delete the program's entire folder and it told me the files were still in use. I don't know what it's doing, but it makes me very suspicious that this could be some kind of malware.

"The Graphics in this program are raggedy!! Ugh!"

Supposedly stores password protected information.

Cons

This is a wanna-be program, with unoriginal raggedy, ugly graphics, (supposedly XP and Vista style - I don't buy it -too ugly and too rough to be XP or Vista Style)and emoticons that are very horribly poor quality. As soon as I installed it I went right back around and took this *hit off my machine.

Lacks a spell check in the free version, Pro version is worth about a buck instead of 25.

Cleverly in the so called free edition there is no Spell Check included....clicking the Spell Check button will pop up a message for you to buy the Pro version for $25....not very nice, since it means there is no really usable free version.
