iFFmpeg

by: Jason Parker on May 26, 2011

iFFmpeg is a free, easy-to-use front-end for the powerful--and also free--command line tool FFmpeg, which lets you easily convert media files between different formats. (Note that you must also download an FFmpeg binary to use iFFmpeg, but the developer's Web site has simple, drag-and-drop instructions for doing so.)

The iFFmpeg interface is straightforward enough for even beginners to use, with a sparse menu bar that lets you add a file to convert, or preview, start, or merge files. You can also look at FFmpeg binary information, choose a codec (from an almost overwhelming array, from basics like AVI, MOV, and WMV to device-specific MP4s for everything from AppleTV to Sony PSP), and adjust a huge number of settings, include bit rate, resolution, and aspect ratio, with separate settings for audio and video. iFFmpeg can also handle batch processing and comes with several localizations.

The latest version improves option help tags and iOS device presets, along with several other feature tweaks and fixes.

Add to all this a responsive developer and a happy user community, and iFFmpeg is a must-download for anyone who wants a free, simple media converter.

From iFFmpeg:

iFFmpeg makes it easy to convert media files with FFmpeg for both beginner and experienced users. iFFmpeg is a front end that does all the hard work for you. This way you can use FFmpeg without the knowledge of all the commands.

"By very far the most powerful converter - period"

April 12, 2014   |   By Stephan1987

Version: iFFmpeg 4.0.6

Pros

Supporting any format including all pro like prores, dnxhd, dvvideo I have never seen any other converter so powerful! Soft and hard subs are supported, cropping and panning and lots of great video filters.

Although I have played around with every other available converter for windows and osx this is by far the best of the bunch.
Its not free though but the low price is worth it every penny.

If you are searching for a flexible, powerful converter then just take a look at this.

Cons

You have to compile or download a FFmpeb binary yourself. Its not difficult though.

"It's not free..."

November 16, 2011   |   By gemmamom

Version: iFFmpeg 2.0

Pros

None that I could see

Cons

It isn't free

Summary

I don't know why this is reviewed as being a free product because it is only a free demo version, you have to pay to continue using it after 8 times. Use ffmpegX instead.

"Why Pay for FREE Unix Commands"

June 22, 2011   |   By adobovs001

Version: iFFmpeg 2.0

Pros

NON ... if you like giving away your Money

Cons

Paying Hard Earned $$$ for yet another Cocoa Wrapper of FREE Unix Commands

Summary

If Unix is to difficult, try FFmpegX - [it does it all and all you have to put up with is an easily dismissed nag screen on startup]
OR check out CLIX - [vast number of Unix Commands & its free - but be careful with some of them]
